Electronic Arts has purchased “Angry Birds” publisher Chillingo for $20 cash, writes Mashable. Since its App Store debut in December 2009, “Angry Birds” has dominated mobile app sales rankings. Nearly 7 million copies have sold at 99 cents each, says developer Rovio. Rovio most recently released a $ 4.99 HD version of “Angry Birds” for the iPad, and an Android port hit that platform in September. Soon Rovio will control the ‘Angry Birds’
In the wake of Electronic Arts purchasing “Angry Birds” founder Chillingo, representatives for the Finland-based company Rovio, which developed the “Angry Birds” app, announced that the Electronic Arts deal permits Rovio to keep creative control of the “Angry Birds” franchise. That will contain “Angry Birds” and “any future products” in the line, Rovio said to Mashable. Any other “Angry Birds” announcements will come later. Thurs could be when they come. 1 million copies of “Cut the Rope,” Chillingo’s most recent app, sold in just 10 days. This shows that “Angry Birds” probably is not going anywhere.
EA wants to work with Apple
EA spokeswoman Holly Rockwood told Reuters that Electronic Arts’ acquisition of Chillingo will serve to boost EA Mobile’s market-leading presence on the iPhone platform, which in turn cements EA Mobile’s place as probably the most successful mobile app company within the world.
A decrease of 1.2 percent to $15.40 was where EA ended up. Reuters explains that this occurred with trading on Nasdaq surprisingly. Whether this has anything to do with Chillingo’s current scheme of offering “Angry Birds” for free on the Android platform with in-game marketing remains to be seen. The video game press appears to be fairly negative about Chillingo offering “Angry Birds” for free on the Android with in-game advertising.
